New funding announced for Snare Forks

The GNWT and federal government are aiming to upgrade aging infrastructure, improve reliance on clean energy use and address affordability issues in the North as a joint funding announcement was made for the Snare Forks Hydroelectricity Facility, Wednesday.

Federal and GNWT politicians were on hand to announce $24.6 million to fund turbine and generator upgrades at the facility on the Snare River, 140 km northwest of Yellowknife.

Michael McLeod, MP for the Northwest Territories and Francois-Philippe Champagne, federal minister of Infrastructure and Communities were on hand to make the announcement on behalf of the Canadian government. Wally Schumann, minister of Infrastructure and Industry, Tourism and Investment, Robert C. McLeod, minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Finance and Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) were also present.

New City of Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty was also in attendance.
