If a commitment between the federal and Tlicho governments goes according to plan, there will be 12 million new trees growing on Tlicho lands in the not to distant future.
On March 7, NWT MP Michael McLeod announced that the Government of Canada and Tlicho Government will be making a joint investment of more than $53 million to plant the trees, which will be grown from seeds collected from local sources over the next seven years.

Part of the Preserving Our Land, Preparing for the Future project, the new trees are intended contribute significantly to habitat regeneration and support at-risk species, such as boreal caribou. It is also hoped that the initiative will help restore local flora, and support pollinators and birds, as well as other mammal species.
The $53-million price tag for the initiative will cover numerous costs, including the construction of greenhouses that will be used as tree nurseries, training of required staff, as well as the harvesting of the seeds and planting of the trees themselves.
