The price of a lot of things will be going up on Jan. 1 and that includes your cell phone bill.
An announcement hit devices Wednesday evening informing customers that the GNWT will be increasing the fee collected for the territory 911 service from $1.70 per month to $3 per month starting on the first day on the new year.
According to the message received by Bell customers, the company collects the fee from its customers and hands it over to the territorial government.
911 service in the NWT hit the five-year mark in 2024, but the fee was a source of controversy years before the service came online in 2019. That's because Bell was charging a 911 fee of 75 cents per month when there was no such service at the time.
James Anderson and his son, Samuel, launched a class-action lawsuit against Bell in 2007 over the fee. It was eventually settled in 2016 for $1 million.
