A long weekend on the links

Yellowknife Golf Club hosts annual 54-hole stroke play tournament with some new names at the top

While many were off enjoying the long weekend doing whatever it was they were doing, some were busy at the Yellowknife Golf Club looking to claim one of the big tournaments of the season.

The August Long Weekend 54-Hole Tournament wrapped up on Monday afternoon with a total of 54 players taking on the course. Everything was divided up into three rounds of play: round one on Aug. 3 was played under tee times, where everyone started at the first tee to play their rounds. Round two the following day was played under shotgun start rules, meaning everyone started from a pre-determined hole and played 18 from that point, while Monday's final round reverted back to tee times.

Monday's order of play was determined by where a player stood in the standings with the four lowest scores teeing off last. That group consisted of Austin Daniels, Clem Hand, Kevin Hewitt and JP Brabant.

Daniels went into the final round with a two-shot lead over Hand, but Hand made up those two shots to end up forcing a playoff to decide the men's champion as they finished with identical 54-hole totals of 232 each. Both players ended going back to the par-5 18th and the best score on the hole would determine the winner.

Both Daniels and Hand had chances at birdie, but it would be Daniels who emerged victorious after Hand conceded with Daniels having a tap-in for birdie.

"That was a real classy move by Clem," said Daniels. "He was classy all day long and he was friendly the whole round. He was great to have as a playing partner, as were the other guys in our group."

Going into the final round with the lead, Daniels said he planned to play conservatively and just keep the ball in play.

"I just wanted to make par, maybe get a look at a birdie when I had the chance, but I just wanted to keep myself out in front," he said. "I had an idea it would come down to Clem and I and we were back and forth the whole round."

The women's champion this year is Linda Khounkhong as her score of 298 was seven shots better than Thip Chanthalangsy, while Bob Ross claimed the seniors crown with a score of 236.

Kylie Frederick, director of golf operations at the club, said having two new names win the men's and women's titles is always good to see.

"(Austin and Linda) both put in a lot of time and practice here and they earned it," she said. "It was also good that a lot of the players stayed around to watch the playoff and be part of the banquet afterwards. Just a great weekend of golf all around."
