The Government of Nunavut announced Monday that the Baffin Island caribou harvest for Iqaluit hunters is closed effective immediately.

No further harvesting is allowed in the community as the Iqaluit allocation of 53 caribou from the total allowable harvest for 2024-25 has been reached. Any Iqallumiut who have harvested caribou prior to this closure notice are still responsible for reporting to the wildlife office.

Any additional harvesting of Baffin Island caribou in Iqaluit during the 2024-25 season will be in violation of the Nunavut Wildlife Act. Violations will be investigated and may lead to enforcement action, according to the territorial government.

The total allowable harvest was established by the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board to help support the recovery of the Baffin Island caribou population.
