Welcome back, sun!

It was so exciting to see the bright sun return after a few weeks of complete darkness in Cambridge Bay. Celebrations were held on Saturday, Jan. 11, with the Department of Healthy Living organizing the activities.

Although it was cold out with a temperature of -33 C, everyone looked at the bright orange sun and beautiful skies in daylight. Shortly after, everyone moved to the community hall, where a feast was held with Cecelia and her staff and volunteers preparing the food for a feast.

In the past, our ancestors used the stars, sun and moon to predict the upcoming seasons. Today, stories are still told of the old days and how Inuit lived and survived out on the land.

HIQINIQ PINGNA NUITAUYAQTUQ. AULIGINGA AULIGINGA. ANGA NGA YAYA IYANGA IYA AYANGA. HIQINIQHAKPUT NUITAUYAQTUQ AULIGINGA AULIGINGA. AULIGINGA AULINGINGA. ANGA NGA YA YA AYANGA.

A celebration song SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” Our Beloved NanakSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” was sung by Rene Oliktoak of Ulukhaktok when honouring the return of the sun.
