The co-operator of the new Ricky's All Day Grill location in Yellowknife is hopeful people will give her new eatery a chance to be successful.
The family restaurant chain will be opening up a new location inside Centre Square Mall and it will be the second one north of 60. The original Northern location is in Whitehorse and that's where Satwant Kaur Dhillon was before she came here to open up the new outlet.
Dhillon, whose nickname is Sweets, had been working as the general manager at the Whitehorse location when she was offered the chance to open up the location where L'atitudes Restaurant used to be. L'atitudes closed its doors to restaurant dining in 2017.
She told SA国际影视传媒 on Tuesday that her boss there had spoken to the management at the Quality Inn about the opportunity to take over the space.
"I'm very excited to be able to do this," she said. "I came two times before now to check the place out and I decided to go for it."
According to the company's history, Ricky's has been around since 1962 with the first location opening in Vancouver called Ricky's Pancake House. The company says it has more than 85 locations around Western Canada, from Manitoba to Yukon.
Dhillon admitted that she didn't know too much about the city before she arrived, but said Yellowknife has the same sort of feel as Whitehorse.
One advantage to being in the mall, she said, was that the hotel is attached to it and that means the potential for plenty of foot traffic.
"There are plenty of guests at the hotel, so it's a good spot for us," she said. "I think people will like what we have to offer them. It's a family restaurant atmosphere with a lot of comfort food and I think people will like it."
shows that it serves items one would typically find in a family restaurant. Breakfast includes pancakes, French toast and a Brekkie Bowl, which features potatoes, eggs, peppers, onions and a hollandaise sauce. The dinner menu includes various soups, sandwiches, burgers and other main courses.
The planned hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, said Dhillon, and she's planning on opening the restaurant in early February if all goes to plan.
"We would like to open as soon as possible, but it takes longer to get things delivered to Yellowknife," she said. "We're just waiting on some equipment, but early February is our plan."
Dhillon also understands the challenge of opening up a new business in the mall, which is a change from businesses moving to other places in town or just shutting shop altogether.
She said she hopes the restaurant will help breathe new life into the building.
"If we have more people coming into the restaurant, it will be good for other businesses that are there and for the hotel," she said. "I'm expecting good foot traffic and that will be good for everyone."
Whatever happens, Dhillon is simply hoping for a chance to serve the public and give them another option for dining.
"I'm hoping we can provide good service and provide a nice environment," she said. "I hope everyone gives us a chance."
