Coun. Cat McGurk has been officially censured by her fellow councillors. But you may be surprised to know that they almost nothing to say when it came to the decision on Monday.
The motion, read by Coun. Stacie Arden-Smith, lasted 40 seconds, with no comment about McGurk's actions following the reading. McGurk was excused from that portion of the meeting.
McGurk's censure stems from a report last month from the city's integrity commissioner, Sheldon Toner, who recommended censure if McGurk did not take responsibility for her actions. She had been accused of trying to use taxpayer money to pay for someone's laptop that she had lost while staying back in Yellowknife during 2023's evacuation.
During a previous council meeting, Coun. Ben Hendriksen said he supported the motion as public trust was at an all-time low for all levels of Canadian government, and wanted to take this issue as seriously as he could.
The motion to censure McGurk was carried by all councillors in attendance except Coun. Tom McLennan, who was not in attendance. It included an acknowledgement that it had received the commissioner's report, that McGurk took responsibility, and that council had censured her.
McGurk has had little to say on the matter, expect that her actions were clouded by grief and trauma
"While last yearSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s events may have informed my conduct, they do not justify it," wrote McGurk in a previous statement to SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½.
