City council has nominated Coun. Garrett Cochrane to act as mayor for this week.
That's because the city's mayor and deputy mayor are unable to act right now. Rebecca Alty is on leave as she's running as the Liberal candidate to become the next MP for the NWT, while deputy mayor Ben Hendriksen is currently out of the country - he's travelling in Slovenia right now.
Coun. Ryan Fequet was quick to nominate Cochrane to fill in as acting mayor until Hendriksen returns. No other councillor was nominated.
City council will vote on the motion to have Cochrane serve during its regular meeting Monday evening at city hall.
Hendriksen said in a previous interview that his colleagues would appoint an acting mayor for one week until his return.
"As Deputy Mayor I will do my best to represent Yellowknifers for the remainder of the election period," he told SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ on March 21.
If Alty wins on April 28, the date of the federal election, the next step will be to figure out what to do to fill the mayor's chair.
Cochrane told SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ there will be a discussion about what the options are for council going forward.
If Alty loses, she can simply return to the mayor's chair, he added.
