There is still no opening date for Yellowknife's new aquatic centre, according to the municipality.
"We are currently in the final stages of completion. We will undergo a series of essential inspections, testing and staff training to ensure everything is in place," said Saxon Chung, a communications advisor with the city. "Once these critical procedures are successfully completed, we will announce the expected opening date."
Chung added that these steps are necessary to guarantee the safety of residents when they finally do get to attend the pool.
"We thank the residents for their patience and understanding as we work toward providing an exceptional experience for our community," said Chung.
Asked what will happen to the Ruth Inch Memorial Pool, Chung said it's still under consideration.
"The 2026 capital budget includes $200,000 for the completion of a public consultation," he noted.
Last December, city manager Stephen Van Dine said the pool would open in May or June 2025. That timeline is later than what the city communicated in June 2024, when it was stated that the pool would be open by early 2025.
The original opening date for the pool was September 2024, which was reported back in 2023.
The total cost for constructing the facility, which started in 2022, is an estimated $71 million. Clark Builders is the company building the pool.
Staff who currently work at the Ruth Inch Memorial Pool will be transferred to the new aquatic centre, Van Dine previously said.
In terms of staffing, the city has stated that there will be eight full-time maintenance staff, two full-time customer service and booking clerks and casual staff along with the lifeguards that will be working on site.
