A 23-year-old man has been charged with bootlegging after an investigation under the NWT Liquor Act last month.
in the community were tipped off about someone planning to sell illegal alcohol in the community and launched the investigation on Nov. 29. Police were told that the suspect would be bringing the illicit booze in on a scheduled flight. The man, who was not named in a news release from on Thursday, was charged on Dec. 5 and appeared in court. He was released with another court appearance scheduled for Jan. 30, 2025 in Deline.
If the accused is convicted, he could face a fine of not less than $500 and not exceeding $25,000 or a term of imprisonment not exceeding one year, or both, if it's a first offence.
Police are also telling the public that there is often an increase in alcohol and substance use around the holiday season, leading to an increase in bootlegging activity.
