Residents of Deline have been put on evacuation notice due to the possibility of the wildfire burning to the southwest of the community getting closer in the next 24 hours.
The notice was issued by the Deline Got'ine Government on Monday evening with strong winds in the forecast for Tuesday that could push the fire nearer to the community, though the risk of flames reaching the community right now is still low. According to the Monday afternoon update from NWT Fire, the blaze was 20 km southwest after making a big run on Sunday because of high winds.
Those winds are expected to continue into Tuesday with the forecast from Environment Canada predicting gusts as high as 80 km/h in the morning. Around 5 mm of rain is also forecast to fall over the course of the day.
The notice also stated that the community government is working with the Departments of Environment and Climate Change, Municipal and Community Affairs and Health and Social Services in the event an evacuation needs to be called for. The next step would be an evacuation alert if the threat becomes more prevalent.
The community is urging residents to be ready in case they have to leave and keep aware of the situation.
