Former Behchoko chief Leon Lafferty claims that two officers forcibly entered his home and assaulted him over the weekend.
The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Oct. 6, according to Lafferty. He claims the two officers, whose names he is aware of, showed up at his door, and entered the premises without knocking or asking to be let in. He claims they were looking for his grandson, who was in the home at the time.
"I told them they couldn't come in without a warrant but they forced their way in and threw me around," he said.
Once inside, he claims the officers pushed him, causing him to fall with enough force that he is scheduled to see a nurse for several injuries on Oct. 7.
"They pushed me back[wards] and then threw me against my arm chair and couch, and I fell onto the stool on on the floor and hurt my shoulder, neck, back and knee," he said.
Lafferty also contends the officers pushed his wife when she asked why he was on the floor.
He claims the officers then detained his grandson, who they were looking for in relation to a previous incident. He said one of the officers "pushed and kicked" his grandson when he "wouldn't get into the vehicle fast enough" because he was handcuffed.
Lafferty claims he attempted to film the incident on his phone, but said one of the officers took his phone and threw it on the ground, breaking the screen and making the device difficult to charge.
"[One officer] actually wrestled [the phone] out of my hand and in doing so hurt my shoulder and arm," he said. "They broke my phone."
Lafferty says he has contacted the about the incident but was only given a phone number for "an independent body."
The was contacted for comment on this incident but did not respond before press time.
