Liidlii Kue Regional High School teacher Jackie Thompson Whelly felt like she was "sneezing whipped cream all weekend" after a recent student fundraising campaign.
In late September, grade 7-12 students at the school set out to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation, a charitable organization that supports cancer research. Their fundraising target was $250. As incentive, Thompson Whelly told the students that, if they achieved their goal, they would have the chance to throw a pie in her face.
When they met their target, it was time for Whelly to deliver on her promise.
In the end, she went above and beyond, allowing the kids to throw a second pie after the first.
"This was something ISA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™ve had in my head for awhile," she said. "We tried to do it last year but it never really took off. This year the kids and staff responded really well and it was a lot of fun.
"[The pie] was my idea, and I volunteered to be the teacher to do it because the cause, I feel, is really important," she added. "I went around the school to see who would be willing to donate to the cause. For every donated dollar by the students they got their name in for the draw of who got to throw the pie in my face. So when the kids started jumping up and donating, I committed to a second pie."
Over the course of the fundraiser, Thompson Whelly was pleased to see the students gain new appreciation for the importance of helping others.
She is considering undertaking a similar campaign again in the future.
"The activity as a whole, I think, had the students thinking about others, thinking about who Terry Fox was and the cause he was running for," she said. "I will be willing to do this in future years. The high school has a great staff who look at bringing fun into the school, so we are looking at other fun ways to fundraise."
