Some of Fox Den Martial Arts' finest flew to Vancouver for a brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament on Oct. 26.

For the most part, they got what they were looking for.

The international tournament's full title, ADCC Vancouver Open, happened at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Hundreds huddled up to either take part in the action or to enjoy it as spectators.

Matches ranged from beginners to black belts. The bouts lasted about six minutes and come with a point system that only kicks in halfway through. Otherwise, a competitor's best bet is to submit their opponent.

Rules aside, the structure of the tournament is fairly simple: if you lose your match, you're out.

Credit to both Fox Den's Tai Leathem and Mohammad Amiri, the two walked away with at least one win in their respective divisions.

Yellowknife-based Fox Den teaches kickboxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and other methods of self-defence.

Editor's note: NNSL reporter and Fox Den student Devon Tredinnick also took part in ADCC. His match was cut short thanks to an unscheduled nap he wound up taking on the mats.
