The Department of Education has announced the launch of the new Nunavut curriculum.
This curriculum is grounded in Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, reflecting Inuit language and culture. It's intended to allow students to receive instruction that will address their learning needs while being more reflective of their identity and environment.
The new Nunavut curriculum will be put in place in kindergarten and Grade 1 in every community across the territory in the upcoming 2025-26 school year. Teaching materials for these grades are available in Inuktut and English.

To help prepare for the transition, the Department of Education will host comprehensive training sessions for educators, which were scheduled to begin the week of March 17. These sessions are designed to focus on teaching strategies, curriculum delivery and the use of assessment tools to monitor student progress. Additionally, educators and support staff will have access to mentorship opportunities and collaborative sessions to help ensure a seamless integration of the Nunavut curriculum into their classrooms.
The new curriculum for kindergarten to Grade 6 is now complete, and the Department of Education will continue to develop the Nunavut curriculum for all remaining grades, a March 13 news release stated. Each year, schools will introduce another grade level of Nunavut curriculum, until full implementation from kindergarten to Grade 12 is achieved in 2036.
