The GNWT has announced updated fuel prices for 10 communities serviced by the Department of InfrastructureSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s Petroleum Products Program.

The communities realizing new fuel rates, which took effect on Feb. 10, are Jean Marie River, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour, Tsiigehtchic, Ulukhaktok, Whatì, Fort Good Hope, Lutsel KSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™e, Sambaa KSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™e and Wrigley.

The prices of heating fuel will go down in Jean Marie River (-4 cents), Paulatuk (-10 cents), Sachs Harbour (-10 cents), Tsiigehtchic (-7 cents), Ulukhaktok (-7 cents), and Whati (-6 cents), and will not change in Fort Good Hope, a news release announcing the updated prices said.

The prices of motive diesel will go down in Jean Marie River (-4 cents), Paulatuk (-11 cents), Sachs Harbour (-11 cents), Tsiigehtchic (-7 cents), Ulukhaktok (-7 cents), and Whati (-6 cents), and remain the same in Fort Good Hope.

Gasoline prices will rise for Fort Good Hope (+5 cents), Lutsel KSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™e (+6 cents), Sachs Harbour (+9 cents), Sambaa KSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™e (+3 cents), Tsiigehtchic (+2 cents), Ulukhaktok (+13 cents) and Wrigley (+4 cents), which the GNWT attributed primarily to "increased wholesale fuel costs."

The GNWT is "required to set retail fuel prices at amounts that recover the full laid-in cost of fuel, which includes the wholesale purchase cost and all transportation costs," the news release explained. "Prices are adjusted at least twice per calendar year, after the summer barge resupply and after the winter road resupply, to correspond with changes to the cost of petroleum products and transporting these products to communities. Prices are also adjusted periodically for other reasons, including changes to the carbon tax program. The next price change due to the carbon tax program is scheduled for April 1, 2025."

With the changes, residents of Sachs Harbour will still have the highest cost of heating fuel, at $2.61 per litre, followed by Paulatuk, where the cost is now $2.60 per litre. Residents of Whati will have the lowest cost of heating fuel, at $1.75 per litre.

In terms of motive diesel, residents of Sachs Harbour will again face with the highest cost, at $2.97 per litre SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” though the cost will be the same in Paulatuk. Whati will have the cheapest motive diesel rate at $2.11 a litre.

Gas will be the most expensive in Sachs Harbour, where residents will now pay $2.92 a litre, and second-most expensive in Paulatuk, where they will pay $2.88 a litre. The price in Whati, the community with the lowest rate, is an even $2 per litre.
