The Green Party says it will have a candidate for MP in the NWT in time for the next federal election.
Fabrice Lachance, press secretary with the party, confirmed that intention to SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ on Feb. 18.
"We currently don't have a candidate for the NWT, but we will have a candidate in the riding during this next election," Lachance said.
The last time the party had an NWT candidate was in 2021, when Roland Laufer was on the ballot. During that federal election, Laufer received 328 votes, according to , making up a little more than two per cent of the territory's vote.
The Liberals won that election with a little more than 38 per cent of the vote. However, winner and incumbent MP Michael McLeod announced his retirement last July. Since then, there's been no confirmation of who will be his successor.
The Liberal Party previously told SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ it will have an official candidate after a new federal leader is chosen SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” scheduled for March 9 SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” and before Parliament returns on March 24, according to David Monroe, chair of the territorial Liberal party's board of directors.
Behind McLeod in the 2021 election was NDP candidate Kelvin Kotchilea, at 32 per cent of the vote. Kotchilea is still the candidate for the party and has submitted a guest column to SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ outlining his vision for the territory.
In third place was Conservative party candidate Lea Mollison, who earned about 14 per cent of the vote. The new candidate for the NWT Conservatives is Kimberly Fairman. It's her first time running, and she too has submitted her own guest column about her plans should she be elected MP.
