The homeless encampment has shrunk but still exists in the parking lot by Aspen Apartments despite the GNWT advising that people living in tents there had until Sept. 12 to leave.

Earlier this month, members of the encampment, alongside a group calling themselves "friends of the encampment residents," wrote and signed an open letter highlighting their needs and priorities. That letter also notes that encampment residents, numbering in the dozens, intended to fully comply with their initial deadline of Sept. 10. The territorial government then extended that date by a couple of days.

Toyeke Adedipe, a senior communications officer with the Department of Finance, previously explained that the GNWT is "encouraging" encampment residents to move their belongings off the parking lot by 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 11 so renovations can begin on time at Aspen Apartments.

Adedipe also stated that the GWNT is figuring out what it will do in response should anyone refuse to vacate the area. 

Portable toilets were cleared away on Sept. 11. The garbage bin at the encampment is also now gone, and litter is visible on the grounds.

NNSL Media contacted the GNWT for further comment but the did not get an immediate reply on Sept. 13. No one at the encampment was available for comment when NNSL Media visited the site.
