If there's one thing all MLAs can agree on, it's that standing up to bullies is the right thing to do.

Pink Shirt Day has become an international annual event that happens on the last Wednesday of February and several elected representatives have told SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ what they plan to do to mark the occasion.

Range Lake MLA Kieron Testart said he's been taking part in his fair share of Pink Shirt Days, even before becoming an MLA.

Working in the public eye means it's especially important to take a stance against bullying, he said.

"Leadership is very important to role-model behaviour, especially in politics and especially in democratic institutions where the rhetoric can get quite heated and where our job is to hold people to account, which can be confrontational at times," he said.

Testart added he has plenty of pink to choose from. He's expecting to wear some combination of a pink and purple suit with a black tie to stand out, he told SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ on Monday.

"Usually, they get us a little rose to wear, or something like that," Testart said about what happens in the legislative assembly. "We do like to take this seriously as a day to call out bullying and show people who are in those circumstances that there's hope."

Sahtu MLA Danny McNeely said he'd be wearing a pink tie he specifically bought for Pink Shirt Day because it's the honourable thing to do.

"It's important to me because I've grown up in the residential school era, so I can understand bullying in general, particularly in those days when you have multiple groups of different ethnic backgrounds and cultures under one roof," said McNeely. "Still, to this day, in some form or another, bullying still seems to be common."

To Testart's point, McNeely highlighted the importance for future generations to look at their leaders taking time recognize the importance of anti-bullying.

Yellowknife North MLA Shauna Morgan said that bullying is not exclusive to kids in school and is present across all ages.

"It's present throughout our society and it is something that we can stand up against and challenge and create new norms, a new culture around to make it something that's not acceptable," said Morgan.

She added that we can all be more mindful of how we speak to each other, especially the people closer to us.

"Sometimes, it's the people we know the best and are closest to that we forget to be respectful and we take those people for granted," she said. "Often, we're the most polite and respectful to strangers."

Morgan added that it's important to respect people's differences and focus on what unites people, rather than divides them.

"We too often focus on the areas of difference and sometimes that looks like making fun of other people for being different, or making others feel ashamed or trying to convince them to be more like us," she said. "Instead, we could spend more time learning about other people's perspectives and reflecting and thinking on it."

Morgan said she hadn't decided what piece of pink attire to sport during session on Tuesday. She admitted she doesn't own much in pink, but noted the colour could be coming back into style.

Morgan stressed she might not be the most reliable source on what's fashionable, however.

"I feel like if it was ever in style it was more of an 80s, maybe 90s thing," said Morgan.
