Justice Minister R.J. Simpson has announced that Judge Jeannie Scott is now the new chief judge of the NWT Territorial Court.
Scott takes over the position from Judge Robert Gorin, whose five-year term expired on Wednesday at 5 p.m., stated a release from the GNWT. Scott assumed the role as soon as Gorin's term was up and now begins her own five-year term as the top judge.
Scott was appointed to serve on the territorial court bench in 2021 and has sat as a judge in communities across the NWT, the release adds.
"She has practiced law for 14 years in the NWT and served as a prosecutor with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, and as a lawyer with the Legal Division of the Department of Justice for the Government of the Northwest Territories," stated the release.
Scott's role will be to supervise the sittings of the court, including assigning judges for court hearings and overseeing the Justice of the Peace program.
"I wish Chief Judge Jeannie Scott every success as she takes on her new role," stated Simpson. "She is a highly respected member of the legal community and has demonstrated a commitment to improving the administration of justice. I am confident she will continue to serve the people of the Northwest Territories well.SA国际影视传媒
