Kathleen Cai has already proven herself to be one of the best table tennis players in the North. She's already been to two Arctic Winter Games and has several ulus to show just how well she's done already.
But how does she do it? She got the chance to tell people from around the country just how at the Sport For Life conference in Gatineau, Que., earlier this month.
Cai, along with Thorsten Gohl, Table Tennis North's executive director, . The topics of the presentation included creating safe spaces, promoting inclusion and empowering athletes with both Cai and Gohl going over exactly how it's done in the NWT.
Cai explained that the culture of Table Tennis North is based around putting the person first.
"We're trying to create a valuable platform to empower individuals to achieve in all endeavours," she told the gathered audience during the presentation on Jan. 22. "Our values are at the core."
Gohl added that it's all about the athletes being who they are.
"If you're big, if you're small, if you're young, if you're old, whoever you are, you can participate and we're trying to create that safe environment," he said.
Once the presentation was over it was time for some questions from the audience.
Cai was asked what she liked the most about table tennis and it was an easy answer: the adrenaline rush.
"I love that when you're playing table tennis, there's a lot of adrenaline," she said. "There's a lot of pressure and a lot of variations and techniques with the combinations that you can play."
