Take a guy from a town in Ontario and pair him up with a highly-skilled Inuk hunter from Whale Cove and you have the makings of one heck of a hunting trip.
Local wildlife officer Oliver Spear said he and George Okalik have made an annual hunting trip every year since Spear moved to the community.
Originally from Huntsville, Ont., Spear said Okalik has taught him everything he knows about wolf hunting out on the land.
He said most of the trips the two go on are successful because of Okalik.
SA国际影视传媒淕eorge is the one who is teaching me,SA国际影视传媒 said Spear. SA国际影视传媒淚'm just another person who's there.
SA国际影视传媒淓verything I know, I owe it to George.SA国际影视传媒
Spear said he and Okalik always talk to as many people as possible on their way out on the land to find out where the caribou are.
SA国际影视传媒淲e usually go down past Arviat but, this year, we knew there were going to be lots of hunters around and they were already down there hunting. Last year, when we went down that way near the Manitoba border, they had already hunted out quite a few wolves, so they were quite hard to find.
SA国际影视传媒淪o George and I decided to go north. We were about 100 miles north of Aberdeen Lake, up near the Gary Lake area. It's actually called Sand Lake.
SA国际影视传媒淲e found the caribou up there. So, we put our tent just east of where they were travelling to and then we started in the mornings to head west down to, like, these ravine areas. George started catching wolves right away near the tent SA国际影视传媒 about two or three SA国际影视传媒 while I had to warm up my battery in the tent after it went dead on me.
SA国际影视传媒淟ater in the day, we found an area where there were a bunch of wolves and we got the whole group.SA国际影视传媒
Spear said the following day, he and Okalik went back to the same spot and there were lots of wolves in the area.
He said they just kept going back near Sand Lake every day and a new pack of wolves would be there waiting for them.
SA国际影视传媒淭he only reason we left there with 24 [wolves] was because the weather was going to get bad. It was just non-stop every day, same area.
SA国际影视传媒淭he first day we got eight. The second day we got three. The third day we got nine and we got four on the fourth day. The weather was bad on the third and fourth days, so they were actually only half days.
SA国际影视传媒淚t was just non-stop wolves up in that area and there were a lot of them. We also got two wolverines on our last day out there.
SA国际影视传媒淲hat made it so successful was the knowledge that George brings to the table with his experience and he teaches me.SA国际影视传媒
Spear said he owes all the success he's had to Okalik.
He said they had some machine problems coming back from bad gas they had got in Baker Lake, so they had to change their fuel filters about five times each out on the land.
SA国际影视传媒淲hat George taught me hunting wolves; you go up to the highest peak you can find in the area where you're catching wolves, and where the caribou are, and you just sit there with binoculars.
SA国际影视传媒淎t first it took me awhile to know what I was looking at, to tell the difference between a wolf and a caribou from really far away, but, after awhile, you slowly get the hang of it.
SA国际影视传媒淭here's lots of little tips and tricks to it and when you're with someone as skilled and knowledgeable as George, it makes a world of difference."
