The man accused of trying to influence Yellowknife's mayor and council while attempting to impersonate NWT fire chiefs has settled the case against him.

Ashley Geraghty pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to influence city council by deceit on Nov. 8, sparing a trial that was due to begin next month, as reported by CBC North.

Geraghty was originally accused of fraudulently misrepresenting an organization called the Northwest Territories Fire Chiefs Association SA国际影视传媒渨ith intent to cause disadvantage to the City of Yellowknife,SA国际影视传媒� and one count of attempting to SA国际影视传媒渋nfluence the City of Yellowknife mayor and council by deceit.SA国际影视传媒�

He was sentenced to a conditional discharge and one year of probation, meaning that if he abides by the sentencing conditions, no conviction will be entered. He'll also be required to perform 80 hours of community service.

Geraghty's plea meant that the Crown dropped the other charge against him.

An agreed statement of facts accepted by the court stated that Geraghty created an email address to send correspondence to Mayor Rebecca Alty and city councillors on Nov. 8, 2022. One email tried to convince Alty and council to ditch the city's emergency dispatch service and move to the territorial 911 service instead. Geraghty worked on bringing the 911 service online while employed by the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs.

The email was signed 'NWT Fire Chiefs Association' and included an attached document titled '911 Risk Assessment Considerations' to add some backup to the request.
