Montreal man arrested at Iqaluit International Airport en route to Clyde River

A traveller from Montreal resident is facing charges after being picked up in transit at Iqaluit International Airport earlier this month.

According to a release from police on Monday, the Nunavut's Federal Policing Northwest RegionSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s Federal Arctic Unit (FAU) with help from Nunavut arrested the suspect during a layover en route to Clyde River. His luggage was intercepted and one ounce of cocaine along with 33 60 oz. bottles of vodka were seized.

As a result, Iakov Verdibekov, 45, has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking in addition to unlawful sale of liquor.

Verdibekov was scheduled to appear in the Nunavut Court of Justice on Feb. 7 and there was no indication whether the accused was remanded or released following his court appearance.
