More Yellowknife councillors weigh in on federal election wants

One councillor desires an MP for 'more than just photo ops'

City councillors continue to sound off on what they want to hear during the current federal election campaign.

"As a city councillor and as a resident of the North, I would like to hear candidates talk about funding opportunities," said Coun. Stacie Arden Smith. "Much of what we have seen at a city level has been funding with limitations/restrictions, especially when it comes to housing."

Arden Smith added that the city has numerous older buildings in dire need of a makeover but there's a lack of available funding to accommodate those kinds of projects.

"Housing is so important, not just low-income but housing across the board."

Arden Smith also urged voters to be informed when it comes to exercising their franchise.

"We are at an interesting juncture in our time. The strength of our nation is being tested, and we need to ensure we have the best minds, hearts and will at the forefront of this battle. I hope voters do their due diligence and get out to vote," she said.

Coun. Ryan Fequet said he wants to hear candidates talk about increased, efficient funding and policies that support housing as his number one priority. He added that addressing the national municipal infrastructure crisis comes second on his list, as well as disaster and mitigation assistance funding.

"Can't wait to hear from our NWT candidates on these topics," he said.

Coun. Steve Payne said one issue he would like to see raised is what candidates will do to help the city acquire land for development. He added that he also wants to hear how each candidate will address the city's aging infrastructure and make funding less strict.

"How will lack of housing be dealt with?" he asked rhetorically in his lists of wants.

Although the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs holds most of the land the city wants, Payne said there's some federal land the city would happily accept, as well as some properties that could be redeveloped.

"A little bit of federal political influence wouldnSA国际影视传媒檛 go astray," he said. "It would be nice to have an MP for more than just photo ops."

Payne said also wants to hear candidates push for resource development in the NWT.

"We canSA国际影视传媒檛 pay our bills on hope and hugs, although some think itSA国际影视传媒檚 possible," he remarked.

SA国际影视传媒 also reached out to Coun. Cat McGurk but she did not respond.

Election day is April 28.
