The NWT's seasonally-unadjusted employment rate is down from this time last year, according to a new report from Statistics Canada.

The rate for November 2024 was 64.8 per cent, the report stated, which marks a decrease of 2.5 per cent from November of last year, when the rate stood at 67.3. This marks a continuation of the trend throughout 2024, when employment rates have remained below those recorded in recent years. It was also the poorest showing for the month of November over the past decade.

In terms of November specifically, employment rates fell across all major working demographics. The sharpest decline occurred among youths aged 15SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½“24, with a decrease from 47.3 per cent to 40.4 per cent. The rate for women also experienced a steep drop, falling from 67.3 per cent to 62.9 per cent. The employment rate for residents of Yellowknife, meanwhile, dropped from 78 per cent to 73.2 per cent.

While these figures are concerning, the NWT's employment rate is still above the rate for all of Canada, which sat at 60.8 per cent in November. Furthermore, the NWT had the second highest employment rate among provinces and territories after Yukon, where the rate was 71.8 per cent.

The lowest employment rates were recorded in Saskatchewan, Quebec and Manitoba.
