All kinds of rumours about the next Arctic Winter Games (AWG) have been flying around, from where they will be located to the form they are taking in Nunavut.
SA国际影视传媒 had a chance to talk with Kyle Seeley, a director with the AWG International Committee, to get the skinny on whether the 2030 AWG could be held in Nunavut and what Nunavummiut can expect should there be a bid launched by the territory.
SA国际影视传媒淓ach of the permanent partners of the Arctic Winter Games have the opportunity to participate in the hosting cycle and that just means that each partner takes turns hosting," he said. "The hosting opportunity is at jurisdictional level, not the community level, which is a very important distinction. Nunavut has a place within that rotation, and our next opportunity to host as a territory is 2030.
SA国际影视传媒淲eSA国际影视传媒檙e a couple years out, but in order to take on a project of that magnitude and that size, we need to do some assessment of what that would look like, and what our capacity to host would be as a territory. As a jurisdiction, we're doing an assessment of various hosting models,SA国际影视传媒 Seeley added.
The first step in that is a feasibility study and that will be conducted by Quantum Recreation based in Edmonton. It's a firm that specializes in recreation planning and playground services, according to its website.
SA国际影视传媒淏ecause Iqaluit is the biggest community in Nunavut with the most infrastructure, the way that weSA国际影视传媒檙e proceeding is to figure out what scope of an AWG could be hosted in Iqaluit, using the existing indoor and outdoor infrastructure, sport facilities and repurpose other public facilities," Seeley continued. SA国际影视传媒淭hat is the nature of the study: which events could be hosted simultaneously here in Iqaluit, within the AWGs staging manual requirements, which sports, how many categories, that sort of thing.SA国际影视传媒
The typical process is that a host community would then need to form a host society, consisting of volunteers, corporate, and municipal government representatives to put in a bid outlining how the games would be hosted.
SA国际影视传媒淭he first thing is the motivation or initiative on the part of a community to request hosting,SA国际影视传媒 said Seeley. SA国际影视传媒淚t takes many years of planning and volunteer recruitment to host an event of that size. What we are doing right now is assessing the capacity of Iqaluit to see how many events could be feasibly hosted to the AWG standard in one community in Nunavut."
Following that review, Seeley said any additional requirements for sites or venues or specific facilities would be considered for inclusion into any proposal.
In terms of projected timelines, Seeley said it's hoped the study will be ready later this year with a report out in the summer.
"It's a very preliminary feasibility assessment of what our capacity to host AWG calibre events, sports and categories," he said. "We want to establish a baseline to inform our next steps in planning what we might propose to the AWG International Committee leading into 2030."
Nunavut was a co-host of the 2002 AWG with Nuuk, but this would be the first time the territory would host the event on its own should a bid be successful.
