The federal government is sending $1 million to the GNWT for the next two years to help address homelessness in the territory.
"In the short term, the Northwest Territories will provide additional shelter spaces to ensure that those in need have a safe and warm space during the winter months," a Dec. 12 Government of Canada news release states. "In the medium to long term, they will work on increasing transitional and supportive housing options for individuals at risk of homelessness..."
The GNWT has promised to match that federal contribution. In November, the territorial government announced an on-the-land homeless camp outside city limits along the Ingraham Trail. The estimated annual cost for this operation is $642,000. Almost all of that that money comes from federal funds, except for $7,000, which the GNWT footed.
"Our government is committed to ensuring that individuals have a place to call home and essential support for healing," Premier R.J. Simpson said. "Tackling homelessness requires collaboration, and this partnership marks meaningful progress in that effort.SA国际影视传媒
This funding is complementary to other funds, like Reaching Home: CanadaSA国际影视传媒檚 Homelessness Strategy. According to Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada, the territory gets almost $35 million from 2019-20 to 2027-28 from that fund, before factoring in additional allocations from Budget 2024.
