The Baker Centre was a little fuller than usual on Oct. 31.
And not because any sort of trick-or-treating.
The GNWT has opened a pop-up clinic for people to get either their flu or Covid vaccines or both, if they wish.
Janie Neudorf, a nurse practitioner overseeing the clinic at the Baker Centre, was sitting behind her desk organizing herself on Thursday morning in preparation for drawing vaccines for those coming in.
She said she expected a busy turnout.
"Seniors are amazing, they're a wonderful population and they are out in full force for their vaccination," she said. "I think they care about their health and we love serving them and they are interested in staying healthy."
Getting a shot is fairly simple, explained Neudorf: people walk into a clinic and show some identification to get registered. After that, once a spot opens, someone will give them their shot.
Aside from the Baker Centre, Neudorf said there are more clinics coming up, including one at Avens today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For youth, Neudorf said Yellowknife Public Health has partnered with the Yellowknife Playgroup Association to host another clinic at the Multiplex on Sunday between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. That's open to families who have at least one child up to age five and is being advertised as a family fun day.
There will be activities that can keep kids entertained, Neudorf added, as well as something called flu mist, a vaccine that is sprayed up the nose rather than a needle.
Neudorf said it takes a team of about 10 to work the clinic at the Baker Centre including administration, nursing, and a couple people drawing vaccines.
"I want people to know that it is really important to get your vaccine," she said. "I think people don't know how sick you can actually get with the flu and there can be really poor outcomes to having seasonal flu. It can lead to hospitalizations."
