Arctic College Minister Margaret Nakashuk announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA), the federal government, and the Government of Nunavut (GN) for a new partnership to deliver training and research in the High Arctic.

It happened at the legislative assembly on March 5.

The QIA has contributed over $500 million towards the centre which will be "the first of its kind in the High Arctic and is envisioned to make training and education more accessible in Inuit Nunangat," according to the announcement.

"Qikiqtani Inuit Association is building a Research and Training Centre in Pond Inlet, set to be completed in 2026," said Nakashuk. "The centre is a key step in empowering Inuit to engage fully in employment opportunities, offering space for organizations and educational institutions to increase Inuit participation in a diversified and evolving economy."

She added that the agreement will create a hub for training and skills development in fields such as conservation economy, Inuit governance, mining, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and research.
