An aggressive dog in Naujaat that was euthanized after it attacked other dogs has tested positive for rabies, according to the Nunavut Department of Health on April 11.
Anyone whose dog that was bitten by the canine in question should call the regional environmental health officer at 867-645-6660 or 867-473-1995.
Any person who was bitten or scratched by a fox or a dog is encouraged to go to the local health centre and report the incident immediately, the Department of Health stated.
"Treatment must be started quickly after exposure, as rabies infections are almost always fatal," reads the department's news release. "Domestic animals that spend time tied up outdoors should be monitored for a change in behaviour and signs of rabies."
Signs of rabies include strange behaviour, acting aggressively, staggering, frothing at the mouth, choking or making strange noises. However, wild animals infected with rabies may also appear friendly and approach humans without fear.
Animals exhibiting unusual behaviour should be avoided and reported to the regional environmental health office or conservation officer.
