The Ranney Hill Trail near Vee Lake remained closed on Monday as wildlife officers continued to comb the area following a report of an aggressive grey wolf on Sunday morning.

According to the Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC), the wolf was spotted by someone walking the trail at around 10:15 a.m. It became aggressive and eventually made contact with the person.

Shannon Graf, a spokesperson with the department, told SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½ that the wolf in question bit the person from behind and that the person did receive medical attention. She added that the department wasn't able to comment on the extent of the injuries sustained or any actions taken following the bite.

Officers began patrolling the area once the attack was reported and the trail remained closed as of Monday evening.

Graf said officers cordoned off the area and placed signage and cautionary tape around along with setting up trail cameras. She added that officers were on patrol until dark Sunday evening and turned people away from the trail area to ensure public safety. Residents are still being asked to avoid the area and pay attention to signage.

If you do encounter a wolf, Graf said you should do the following:

  • Raise your arms to make yourself appear as large as possible
  • Act aggressively towards it SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½“ make noise and throw objects
  • Do not turn your back on the wolf and do not run
  • If the wolf does not run away immediately, continue making yourself large, maintaining eye contact, and backing away
  • Calmly, but slowly back away and maintain eye contact
  • If you encounter a wolf and your dog is present, bring your dog to heel at your side as soon as possible. Standing between your dog and the wolf usually ends an encounter. Do not try and break up a physical fight between the wolf and your dog to avoid any risk of injury to yourself.

If you do see any wolves at all, you're asked to call ECC's North Slave office at 867-446-2073.
