It was a spectacular summer day for a baseball game on Saturday, Aug. 17, in Iqaluit.
Near the airport, two of the city's C Division teams in the Iqaluit Slo Pitch League took to the ball diamond a friendly game as the Qikiqtaluuk Chargers took on the Aqsarniit Hotel Isotopes.
There are three divisions in the league, determined by skill level. Each team comprises 14 players, 10 on the field and four subs on rotation. Since the end of June, there have been two games a week, lasting seven innings or an hour and 40 minutes.
"My vision [was] I wanted to have a team through my company," said Badri Mani, team captain for the Chargers. "We love the game, but it's more about camaraderie. I have been playing since last year, but it was last season I applied directly to company management and said we need a team as part of our empowerment wellness initiative.
"It's mostly brought our employees together, across departments, and gave us the opportunity to know each other in a real way," he added. "We take that positive attitude back to the office, and it makes for easier communication. You no longer have to feel like you are alone here once you are a part of the group."
Most of the Qikiqtaaluk Corporation team members are QC employees, relatives and friends. The five squads in C Division play each other on a rotating basis until the finals, which were slated for Aug. 23. After games, the teams typically go out for dinner or drinks at NewBrew.
"Just come with a positive attitude," said Badri.
