Ten new housing units headed to Tlicho communities

Homes expected to be occupied this spring

There are 10 new housing units headed to the Tlicho communities of Behchoko, Gameti and Whati.

The delivery of the new homes was announced in a Feb. 24 news release from Housing NWT and the Tlicho Investment Corporation, who partnered on the project.

The residences will be contained in several duplexes and are intended for "seniors and individuals," according to the news release.

Behchoko will receive three duplexes, including a modular single-occupancy duplex, a modular seniors duplex, and a stick-built two-storey duplex. Gameti will get one modular singles duplex. Whati is set to receive one stick-built, two-storey duplex.

The new units are expected to be occupied this spring.

"ISA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™m pleased to see this collaboration between Housing NWT and the Tlicho Investment Corporation bringing real housing solutions to the Tlicho region," said Lucy Kuptana, GNWT minister responsible for Housing NWT. "These new duplexes will provide seniors and individuals with safe, comfortable and energy-efficient homes, allowing them to remain in their communities with dignity. There is no question that housing challenges in the NWT require a collaborative approach. By working with Indigenous governments and organizations, we can maximize investments, create more opportunities for Northerners and build strong, self-sufficient communities. This project is delivering more homes for Northerners SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” something we need to see more of in every region of the territory."

Funded by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC), the new homes will be "built to high energy-efficiency standards," according to the news release. They will feature triple-glazed windows, airtight construction and highly-efficient heating systems to reduce utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

The units intended for seniors will include barrier-free kitchens and bathroom fixtures aimed at improving accessibility.

"Housing is one of the biggest challenges in our communities, and these new homes will make a real difference for residents in Behchoko, Gameti and Whati," said Jane Weyallon Armstrong, MLA for the three communities. "These homes will allow seniors to stay close to their families and give singles a safe place to live. We need more projects like this to address housing needs across the Tlicho region and the NWT."
