Traffic stop nets thousands in suspected illicit cash

Cell phones and drug paraphernalia also seized; two occupants of vehicle face charges

A traffic stop around Hay River on Tuesday has netted what police suspect to be ill-gotten gains.

A release on Wednesday afternoon from NWT stated that officers from the Hay River detachment were out on patrol when they spotted a vehicle that was speeding. When the vehicle was pulled over, officers believed the vehicle was being used to transport illicit cargo and the occupants were subsequently arrested.

The vehicle was then searched and that led to the seizure of more than $9,000 in cash along with several cell phones drug paraphernalia.

The two occupants of the vehicle, 20-year-old Salim Abdullahi Abdi of Edmonton and 53-year-old Bruce Dowdeswell of Fort Simpson, have each been charged with possession of property obtained by crime. Abdullahi Abdi appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody, while Dowdeswell was released on strict conditions to appear in court at a later date.
