Two Iqaluit residents are facing charges after a traffic stop earlier this month turned up a prohibited loaded firearm.

Iqaluit pulled a vehicle over by the legislative assembly building on Sivumugiaq Street at around 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 4. During the stop, police identified a passenger wanted in relation to three separate investigations and was subsequently arrested on scene. A search of the suspect's vehicle turned up the prohibited firearm in the suspect's vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was also arrested after the discovery of the weapon.

As a result, Robert Campbell, 36, and Nadeem Gebara, 40, have both been charged with unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, and careless transportation of a loaded prohibited firearm.

Gebara is from the execution of search warrants in late January which turned up cocaine, $17,000 in cash, a loaded handgun, pepper/bear spray, multiple cell phones, a stolen firearm and three polar bear carvings which police believe were stolen.

Campbell was remanded in custody with his next court appearance scheduled for March 4 in Iqaluit. Gebara was released following a bail hearing, with his next court appearance scheduled for March 3 in Iqaluit.
