A pair of youths from Saskatchewan have been sentenced in connection with an arrest back in August in Fort Providence.
It happened on Aug. 30 when the pair, aged 16 and 17, were spotted loitering around a local business in the community. Police found the pair and discovered that both had active warrants out for their arrest at the time. During a search, officers found a firearm with ammunition, more than 100 grams of suspected crack cocaine, more than $1,200 in cash and other drug paraphernalia.
At the time, the two were charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition without licence, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, and two counts of careless use of a firearm. The 16-year-old faced three additional counts of failure to comply with a probation order, while the 17-year-old faced one extra count of possession of a weapon contrary to a court order.
Neither of the youths can be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
A Monday morning release from indicated that the 16-year-old pleaded guilty on Oct. 30 and was sentenced to 15 months of custody - 10 months of closed custody and 5 months open - and was also issued a firearms prohibition. The 17-year-old pleaded guilty on Dec. 5 and was sentenced to six months of deferred custody as well as receiving a firearms prohibition.
Both youths were also ordered to provide a sample of their DNA to the national database.
