What do the MLAs want for the holidays?

Premier R.J. Simpson wants more money from Ottawa, others want better housing and improving on strengths

On Wednesday, SA国际影视传媒 published a Christmas wish list from Yellowknife city council. This edition, we're doing the same thing, only this time, we put the question to the MLAs at the legislative assembly.

We asked every MLA what they would want for the holidays and what New Year's resolution they might have.

Some of the responses we received included Premier, R.J. Simpson, who said he'll be looking for more money from the federal government.

"ISA国际影视传媒檓 focused on advancing key priorities: securing federal investments in critical minerals, infrastructure, health care, and housing. These are essential to building a stronger, more resilient North that works for everyone," said Simpson.

He added that his New Year's resolution is to continue delivering on the mandate commitments he made to Northerners and to work with cabinet and all partners to progress in 2025.

Housing NWT Minister Lucy Kuptana said there is much to wish for.

"Improved living standards for residents including quality, affordable housing, dental care for our more isolated communities, more nurses in our smaller communities. Safer communities and healthier communities," she listed.

As for a resolution, Kuptana said her first year in office was an initiation and now her and other MLAs all know what to do.

"Focus and work hard for communities," she said.

Mackenzie Delta MLA George Nerysoo had a wish and it involved calling out Housing NWT.

"I would like Housing NWT to take the priority of this government very serious and start working for the residents of the Northwest Territories," said Nerysoo. "More emphasis should be put on market housing and home ownership.  The collaboration with the Indigenous governments is crucial and we can find potential solutions (and) the needs to be addressed."

He added that the education system has to be addressed for the future of the NWT and the benefit of small communities.

"Public engagement needs to be part of this phase of improvement," Nerysoo added

Yellowknife North MLA Shauna Morgan said her holiday wish is for all governments and community members alike to spend more time recognizing and improving its strengths, rather than focusing on all of the SA国际影视传媒渟tuffSA国际影视传媒 it lacks.

"My New YearSA国际影视传媒檚 resolution is to focus on the things that matter most and not get distracted by the shiniest or loudest things," Morgan added.

Finance Minister Caroline Wawzonek said she would like recovered water levels and no extreme events that result in saying SA国际影视传媒渆vacuationSA国际影视传媒 and more permafrost.

"Clear skies to wow the aurora visitors and inspire more to come would be nice, too," she added.
