Golf is always a great way to raise money and several ladies did just that at the Yellowknife Golf Club on July 27.
The annual F*ck Cancer ladies golf tournament brought together around 30 players for a round of 18 holes while raising money in support of the CIBC Run For Our Lives campaign. This year's tournament was being played in honour of the late Robin Mercer-Sproule, who succumbed to cancer in 2020, and Mary-Ellen Savard, who died last July from a brain tumour.
Kylie Frederick, the club's director of golf operations, said it was just a nice day to go out and play golf and raise as much money as possible.
"A lot of people knew Robin and Mary-Ellen and it was nice to see everyone out supporting a great cause," she said.
There was an actual tournament being played and when the scores were counted, Colleen Pura ended up as the overall low gross winner with an 18-hole score of 82. Renee Jones was the low net winner with a round of 68. The low net is calculated by taking a golfer's gross score minus the player's handicap.
As of Thursday afternoon, around $6,000 was raised and that money will be going to the Stanton Foundation, which helps look after the Run For Our Lives.
Patty Olexin-Lang, the foundation's executive director, said the funds will be put toward a new campaign that's now underway to help raise money for more needed equipment at the hospital.
That wish list from the hospital includes a breast ultrasound machine, two automated endoscope reprocessors (designed to kill microorganisms in or on reusable endoscopes by exposing their outside surfaces and interior channels to high level disinfectant) and a colposcope examination chair, which helps perform an examination on a cervix.
Olexin-Lang said those four items together are estimated to be around $600,000.
She added that five volunteers from Run For Our Lives were on hand for the tournament to help out and that they had a wonderful time.
