For a week, a devoted group of Gwich'in participants took to the waterways of the Mackenzie Delta, following the "highways" used for generations untold. The 'We Are United As One' canoe trip began in Tsiigehtchic, with a day of orientation Aug. 2, followed by a casting-off ceremony the next day.
From there, the voyageurs made their way towards the Gwich'in Wellness Camp, stopping to visit people's camps along the way. An eager crowd of supporters who had access to boats were on hand to greet the paddlers when they arrived Aug. 7.
