Inuvik stop three impaired drivers over weekend

Inuvik say they were able to stop three impaired drivers over the weekend, thanks in large part to public informants.

Posting on social media on Aug. 27 shortly after 10:30 a.m., the police said there were three incidents between Aug. 23 and 26.

"This weekend, as a result of proactive traffic enforcement and two tips from the public, Inuvik were able to take three impaired drivers off the road," the post reads. "Two of the motorists were charged after they provided breath samples indicating a blood alcohol content of twice the prescribed limit or higher.

"A third motorist refused to provide breath samples and was charged with the offence of refusal, which carries the same penalties as providing samples above the limit. Disturbingly, one of the drivers was arrested at 10 in the morning, while another was arrested in the afternoon, hours during which the community would be most active and at greater risk. The reminds motorists that impaired driving often carries lethal consequences for both drivers and pedestrians."

Police remind residents that if they see a suspected impaired driver or any sort of suspicious activity, the best course of action is to inform police as soon as possible. can be reached by phoning (867) 699-1111 or tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at http://www.p3tips.com.
