Minor quake west of Aklavik
There was a magnitude 3.6 earthquake in the mountains west of Aklavik on Sept. 2 at approximately 5:34 a.m., occurring roughly five kilometres deep. This is the third small quake recorded in the area in the last 30 days, none of which exceeded magnitude 3.8 in intensity, according to the Alaska Earthquake Centre. No shaking was reported and no damage is expected.
First structure of Gwich'in housing initiative arrives
The first of the Gwich'in Tribal Council's efforts to expand available housing in the region has arrived by barge. An announcement was posted to the GTC's social media feed on Sept. 1. The manufactured home came in two pieces and is expected to be assembled over the fall.
Gwich'in Elders and knowledge-keepers wanted
A call for Gwich'in knowledge-keepers and Elders to help provide on-the-land programming and other supports has been issued by the Gwich'in Tribal Council (GTC). Anyone interested in sharing stories, cultural practices, traditional knowledge or skills, and is willing to model a sober lifestyle and Gwich'in values, is asked to contact GTC director of health and wellness Sallie Ross at (867) 777-7900.
Harvest fest this week
One more festival remains on the calendar before the snow drops SA国际影视传媒� Inuvik Harvest Fest is set for Sept. 7, with activities split between Chief Jim Koe Park and the Inuvik Greenhouse. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be an Arctic market, carnival activities, a community lunch and dinner, a garden contest, workshops on harvesting and a guided nature walk. All events are free to attend.
