Gwich'in canoe trip seeks applicants

An upcoming canoe trip following the traditional waterways of the Gwich'in is being planned this summer. The Khehlok Zhan iidalii/ Ihlak kSA国际影视传媒櫭瑃 矛id矛l矛h canoe trip is looking for participants aged 14 years or older in good physical shape, as the journey will be active and challenging. With the aim of connecting youth with Elders, the group will canoe down the Nagwichoonjik, AKA Mackenzie River, from Tsiigehtchic to the Gwich'in Wellness Camp.

The deadline to apply is June 28 and the canoe trip is planned for Aug. 6-10. Visit https://form.jotform.com/gtcforms/we-are-united-as-one/ or phone Ashley at 587-394-7865 to sign up. All participants will be paid a $300 stipend.

Inuvialuit planning youth wellness gathering

A gathering for Inuvialuit youth aged 16 to 29 is being organized by the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation health and wellness division. The intent is to bring together Elders with youth who are struggling to envision what they want for the future. Stories will be told of local Indigenous role models. With a focus on mental wellness and self-esteem, the gathering is hoped to help youth plan for their future. Applicants must reside in Aklavik, Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour or Ulukhaktok. Visit the local community corporation to register.

Road closure for utilidor work

Town of Inuvik officials are issuing notice that a section of Firth Street and Wolverine Road will be closed from June 21-Aug. 31 for utilidor installation. The road is closed from where Wolverine meets Reliance Street and Firth meets Inuit Road. For more information, contact the town's department of public safety and infrastructure at Infrastructure@inuvik.ca or by phone at 867-777-8600.

Learn Gwich'in at the greenhouse

Inuvik Community Greenhouse is offering drop-in classes in Tetlit Gwich'in every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Taught by Margaret Thompson and Jacey Firth-Hagan, the classes are open to everyone and will be ongoing until September. Suggested donation for admission is $10.
