Aklavik holds flood preparation meeting
Residents, homeowners and business-owners in Aklavik were invited to a May 24 flood preparation meeting hosted by hamlet council. Council had prepared an update to the community flood plan for those with concerns. The last time Aklavik had to be evacuated due to flooding was in 2021.
More earthquakes near Aklavik
Seismic activity has been picking up slightly on the NWT-Yukon border west of Aklavik. Natural Resources Canada reports that three earthquakes were recorded in the same area been 56 and 60 kilometres west of Aklavik on May 23. This follows a small quake in the same area on May 20. The tremors were between magnitude 3 and 4.5 and pose no threat to public safety.
Community science fun night in Tuktoyaktuk
Science enthusiasts in Tuktoyaktuk will want to make their way to Mangilaluk School on June 6 for a community science fun night. From 6 to 8 p.m. kids of all ages will be able to explore coding, geography, rockets, drones and virtual reality. The evening is being put together by the Aurora Research Institute.
Construction-oriented scholarships available
Housing NWT is reminding students that the Alfred Moses Memorial Scholarship and the Tom Williams Memorial Scholarship are available and taking applications until June 6. Twelve scholarships of $1,000 are available for NWT students studying a housing-related field at a post secondary institution. Fields of study can range from carpentry to social work.
