Amier Suliman has lived in Inuvik for over 30 years. He is seeking a seat on town council.

1) What made you decide to run for a seat on town council?

ISA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™ve been involved in various community initiatives, and through this, I realized that I could bring a unique perspective to the council. ItSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s not just about having a voice, itSA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½™s about making that voice count.

2) What experience do you bring to the table?

Community Involvement SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” I have been actively engaged in various local organizations and initiatives, which has allowed me to understand the unique needs and concerns of our residents.

Collaboration and communication SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” I have experience working with diverse groups, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that all voices are heard. This is crucial for building consensus and promoting inclusivity within the community.

Having lived in Inuvik for 30 years, I have a deep understanding of the challenges our community faces... outreach collaboration is beneficial for stakeholders. With this valuable knowledge we achieved in building a strong Muslim community.

3) What do you see as the big issues facing Inuvik this election?

Community engagement fostering a sense of community and ensuring that all voices are heard in the decision-making process is important for building trust and collaboration among residents. The availability and affordability of housing are significant concerns. Addressing these issues is crucial for attracting and retaining residents, as well as supporting community well-being.

4) How do you propose that these issues be resolved?

The town mayor and councillors to engage with Aboriginal groups  to understand housing needs and preferences, ensuring that solutions are culturally appropriate and effective. Development incentives: work with the government to create incentives for developers to build affordable housing and explore options for community-led housing initiatives.

5) What is your favourite thing about Inuvik?

The baseball season and various community activities serve vital aspects of my enjoyment.

6) Anything else you would like to add?

Looking ahead, it may be beneficial for the community to explore opportunities for collaboration among various groups, including local organizations, government and Aboriginal communities, to ensure that diverse voices are heard in planning and decision-making. Additionally, promoting volunteerism and encouraging participation in community initiatives can help sustain and further develop the vibrant community life that residents cherish.

The advance vote for the municipal election is Oct. 11 and election day is Oct. 21.
