Arno Willkomm wants to see access to more services in Inuvik.

1) What made you decide to run for a town council seat?

I've always thought about running for town council. There are issues in the town that are important to me, and what better way to address those issues and learn more about them than to run for council.

2) What experience do you bring to the table?

I've been coming up to Inuvik since the mid-1980s because my parents owned a business. I worked for them in the summers. Inuvik in the 1980s and 1990s had services, restaurants, a dentist and it was a bustling hub. In 2013, my family and I moved to Inuvik and have made it our home. We want to live in Inuvik and have invested in the community. I would like to see access to more services here.

3) What do you see as the big issues facing Inuvik this election?

There are many issues: substance abuse and addictions, the rapid growth with new housing and buildings, the growth at the satellite station, the airport expansion, the garbage around town and the overall direction the town will head in with all this rapid growth. I'd like to learn more about the closures and access to the Midnight Sun Recreation Centre. It is an integral part of the town and provides positive and healthy outlets for all community members. Also, for the council to continue working with the Gwich'In and Inuvialuit and their treatment centres in the community, so we can support healthy living in Inuvik. It's not just jobs and industry that contribute to Inuvik residents' quality of life, it's the ability to live and thrive outside of work that can help keep our community healthy and thriving.

4) How do you propose that these issues be resolved?

The new homes being built by the Gwich'In and Inuvialuit are great to see. Increased access to, and programming at the Midnight Sun Recreation Centre, and through other town initiatives will allow residents options and outlets. There are many programs like Culture Connections, language classes, cooking classes and more. I'd like to see the town offer sustained programming in conjunction or partnership with the Indigenous groups. Ideally, on the town council I can support initiatives to keep the town looking clean, and I'd like to offer a voice about the zoning, looks and placement of many new projects. With all of the building activity, I support new businesses opening and programming to keep residents growing and supported.

5) What is your favourite thing about Inuvik?

My favourite thing about Inuvik is I love the North, the Delta, It is a beautiful place. It is a hub, it's a destination, It's a great place for raising a family and it can provide opportunity. There is a sense of community and it is my and my family's home.

6) Anything else you would like to add?

If I am elected to council, I will have a steep learning curve. I believe I can bring an informed opinion to many initiatives and concerns brought forward. I am also willing to listen and learn about all the other parts I don't know. Through my work, I have had the opportunity to meet many different people in Inuvik and I want to continue to be involved and learn more about what makes Inuvik great, and what can help it improve.

The advance vote for the municipal election is Oct. 11 and election day is Oct. 21.
