Melinda Gillis has previously sat as an Inuvik town councillor.

1) What made you decide to run for a town council seat?

One of the reasons I d.ecided to run for town council is that I care and love Inuvik. I was raised here I raised my children here, and today I have two grandchildren being raised here. Through the years of raising a family, I see the need to have healthy, safe activities, events and opportunities. I would like to be part of the planning and decision-making with the business and activities the Town of Inuvik is part of.

2) What experience do you bring to the table?

My experience I bring is being a past Town of Inuvik councillor, past chair for the Children First Society, chair of the Inuvik Community Corporation and planner/organizer for many events and activities in Inuvik. I am a mother, grandmother and a business owner. Inuvik has been my home all my life and this is where I plan to live the rest of my life.

3) What do you see as the big issues facing Inuvik this election?

For families, I believe the need to update/improve functional recreation infrastructure, such as the pool. Also looking at the need for child care both in facilities and private homes. For business, look at the opportunities that industry, Indigenous organizations and government can provide together to improve and develop the needs of our community.

4) How do you propose that these issues be resolved?

I believe in working with everyone to achieve goals and objectives. The strengths I have are preparing for each meeting, attending the meetings regularly, participating and make decisions when plans come to the table.

5) What is your favourite thing about Inuvik?

My love for Inuvik is evident as I enjoy being part of and participating in activities and events, such as gardening at the greenhouse, jamborees, watching wrestling or walking the Boot Lake Trail with family and friends. There are many things to do in Inuvik and I would like this to continue.

6) Anything else you would like to add?

I seek your support so that I can work to see that Inuvik continues to always have many opportunities and activities for residents to enjoy.

The advance vote for the municipal election is Oct. 11 and election day is Oct. 21.
