Profiling candidates for the Oct. 21 municipal election

Steven Baryluk has previously served two terms as a town councillor.

1) What made you decide to seek another term on town council?

I previously served on council for two terms and enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to give something back to my hometown. I had been considering getting engaged again and given that the last two elections had very few candidates, I decided to go for it. It's great to see so many good candidates put their names forward this time around, and, if elected, I look forward to working with them.

2) What have you learned from your last term?

In my previous time on council I learned a lot about what makes this community run behind the scenes SA¹ú¼ÊÓ°ÊÓ´«Ã½” there were many things I was unaware of despite living here my whole life. This time I feel like I could hit the ground running without having to go through the learning curve.

3) What do you see as the big issues facing Inuvik this election?

Big issues continue to be seeking opportunities for Inuvik to continue the path of growth and development that it's recently been on, including making itself attractive as an Arctic hub for research and innovation. Strengthening partnerships with our regional Indigenous organizations is another opportunity to advance these, and other items, such as housing development and improvements. The potential to see a military base re-established in Inuvik could be a significant opportunity for growth. As the airport runway expansion nears completion, the town should also seek arrangements to utilize the paving contractors that will be here to fix the roads in need around the community. And who can forget about continued work to get the pool back running and available for use.

4) How do you propose that these issues be resolved?

The town should continue to lobby the federal government for the military base to operate out of Inuvik, as well as continued expansion and use of the satellite station facility. Completion of the Dempster Fibre Line may open new technology-related opportunities that should be explored now that there is some redundancy in the system. The town also needs to ensure it has appropriate zoning plans in place for possible future growth.

Advertising Inuvik as a conference and meeting hub should be continued and expanded to bring external dollars into the community, as well as continued promotion of the Arctic Development Expo.

5) What is your favourite thing about Inuvik?

Inuvik is a small town, but has many amenities for a community of this size. The relaxed pace of life is such a benefit for residents. Friendly people and the sense of community are amazing.

6) Anything else you would like to add?

Don't forget to enter and vote for the 2024 Inuvik Pet Mayor and Council as a great fundraiser for Arctic Paws!

The advance vote for the municipal election is Oct. 11 and election day is Oct. 21.
