Two homes were destroyed but no major injuries were reported in a massive June 28 structure fire in Inuvik.
Inuvik fire chief Brian Larman confirmed there were no injuries or fatalities in the blaze. One of the homes destroyed belonged to Inuvik-Boot Lake MLA Denny Rodgers.
In a statement published to its social media feed, the Inuvik Fire Department (IFD) said the fire fully engulfed a home and a second residence had been ignited by the time fire trucks made it to the scene. Firefighters focused on preventing the flames from spreading to additional homes down the block. A total of 22 firefighters and three apparatus were involved in the suppression efforts.
"The two involved structures could not be saved; several adjacent buildings sustained minor damage due to radiant heat," reads the statement. "All occupants of the structures were able to escape and there was no loss of human life, although, unfortunately, a family pet perished. We ask that the community and others respect the privacy of those affected.
"Three IFD personnel were transported to the hospital for assessment for heat-related issues due to the environmental factors experienced during the event. All have been released and are well. The IFD would like to thank Advanced Medical Solutions, , Canadian Forces firefighters, Northwind Industries, Inuvik Gas, Town of Inuvik Public Works, NTPC, Inuvik Regional Hospital, Stanton Distributing and the many individuals and citizens who assisted in various capacities on scene. Our members train hard to provide effective firefighting services but relies on help from allied agencies and the community during major events such as this."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A third home was saved but the owner's belongings have been destroyed by the heavy smoke. A has also been set up for the third home.
